Language Program
Swahili Cultural Institute (SCI) offers Swahili language Classes from elementary to advanced level through the SASA Academy. These are exclusively online classes.
Our instructors follow a communicative approach to language teaching and competency-based curriculum whereby reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills are considered equally important. Activities, assignments, exercises, and quizzes are designed to develop the ability to function in various situations such as professional, academic, and social ones. Aspects of Swahili/African history and culture are incorporated and highlighted as necessary components towards achieving communicative competence. Students also get an opportunity to interact with native Swahili speakers and engage in cultural activities to improve their speaking skills.
Advancement of students from one level to the next as well as students’ placement tests are in accordance with the (The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) ACTFL proficiency guidelines. The courses offered are as follows:
- Elementary Level: –This is a course for absolute beginners. It aims at developing basic listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills.
- Intermediate Level:- This cause builds on elementary level skills both for continuing and incoming students . It enhances the students’ proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in meaningful communicative contexts.
- Advanced Level:– In this course, students work with advanced Swahili grammatical patterns and explore contemporary issues of the Swahili speaking world.
- Customized classes: – Based on needs such us work assignment, tourism, exchange programs.
